What is Contemporary Technology?
The term “Contemporary” means “Modern/occurring in the present”. So, Contemporary Technology refers to the technologies that are currently in use or are emerging as a trend. It’s a dynamic term; the word “Contemporary” is itself ever-changing. The technologies that have not yet been replaced by any other technology that performs similar functions can be classified as Contemporary Technology.
What are some Contemporary Technologies?
This article was written in 2023, as of now. The world is introduced to technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, blockchain, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), Internet of Things (IoT), 5G communication, Decentralized Finance, biotechnology advances, renewable energy solutions, and quantum computing, among others.
A brief introduction to Contemporary Technologies:
1) Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence has rapidly grown in the past few years. This technology uses computers to make them think and act like humans. The computers are fed sets of instructions and datasets which they learn from. AI is a vast topic that covers a lot of information and fields.2) Machine Learning: Machine Learning is the subset of Artificial Intelligence. Machine Learning is well known as applications or machines trained on existing data so that they can find patterns, make predictions, or perform tasks on new data. The robots that are trained to do repetitive tasks is a good example of Machine Learning.
3) Blockchain: Blockchain is a method of recording information that makes it impossible or difficult for the system to be changed, hacked, or manipulated. The concept of blockchain is to structure data as blocks, and block built into a blockchain ecosystem are interlinked. Each block in a blockchain has its unique code called a hash. When anything in a block is changed, the hash of that block and subsequent blocks are altered, enhancing its security.
4) Augmented Reality (AR) & Virtual Reality (VR): Augmented Reality overlays digital information, such as images, videos, or 3D models, onto our real-world view. Using devices like smartphones, tablets, or AR glasses, AR captures and processes the real-world environment, recognizes certain elements, and seamlessly integrates digital content into it. On the other hand, VR immerses users entirely within a digital environment, disconnecting them from the real world. This environment can either mirror real-life scenarios or be entirely fictional. Using devices like VR Headsets.
5) 5G Communication: 5G is the fifth generation of cellular networks. Up to 100 times faster than 4G, 5G is creating never-before-seen opportunities for people and businesses. 5G Communication aims at providing faster internet speed, low latency and higher bandwidth. 5G can find it’s application in e-health, communication and transportation system.
6) Decentralized Technology: Decentralized finance, also known as DeFi, uses cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to manage financial transactions. DeFi aims to democratize finance by replacing legacy, centralized institutions with peer-to-peer relationships.
Why do we need Contemporary Technology? (Advantages)
We need Contemporary technology because of the following reasons:
1. Efficiency and Productivity: Modern technologies often lead to faster, more efficient processes in industries, businesses, and daily life. For example, Robots that are trained using Machine Learning can handle repetitive tasks, freeing up humans for more complex activities.
2. Accessibility: Contemporary technologies have made information and resources more accessible to people worldwide. Technologies have developed equipment such as hearing aids and accessible transportation services for amputees increasing accessibility.
3. Innovation: New technologies often pave the way for further innovations, creating a cycle of advancement. For example, the rise of the internet led to the development of cloud computing, IoT, and more.
4. Improved Quality of Life: Medical advancements, smart home technologies, and enhanced communication tools have significantly improved many people’s lives.
5. Global Connectivity: Technologies like the internet and smartphones have connected people globally, breaking down geographical barriers.
6. Personalization: AI and data analytics allow for personalized experiences, from tailored shopping recommendations to individualized learning paths in education.
Where are Contemporary Technology effectively used? (Application)
1. Healthcare: Advanced medical equipment, telemedicine, AI-driven diagnosis, and personalized treatments.
2. Education: E-learning platforms, virtual classrooms, and AI-driven personalized learning experiences.
3. Entertainment: Streaming services, AR/VR gaming, and interactive media.
