Haloalkanes (R-X) General Formula CnH₂n+1-X

Haloalkanes are derivatives of alkanes (hydrocarbons) obtained by replacing one or more hydrogen (H) atoms with halogen atoms (X). i.eThe general formula for haloalkanes is CnH₂n+1-X where X represents the halogen atom.

Nomenclature:

In this case, name of halogen is used as prefix which is followed by the name of corresponding alkane i-e. Haloalkane.

They are classified as follows :
Primary or 1° Haloalkanes:

In this case, halogen atoms or group is bonded with primary carbon.

Secondary or 2° Haloalkanes:

Those compounds on which halogen group are bonded with 2° carbon atom.

Tertiary or 3° Haloalkanes:

In this case, halogen group is bonded with 3° carbon atom.
